Remote screen resolution reverts to 640x480

Last updated on May 31, 2023

Problem

After connecting to a remote computer, its screen resolution reverts to 640x480 making it difficult to view/control the remote desktop.

Cause

This issue may occur when connecting to a headless computer or virtual machine (machine without a connected display). In such cases, Windows automatically emulates the missing monitor by assigning a 640x480 screen resolution.

Solution

Manually select the preferred Display Resolution in the remote computer's Display Settings
